The decision to repair existing fixtures or start fresh can often
be difficult. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when determining
if it is time to replace:
Is condensation and/or fogging visible between panes of glass?
The cause is the aluminum spacer between the panes has broken
its bond with the glass allowing moisture to penetrate. As windows warm
with the sun or the heat within the house, condensation and fogging is
noticeable. LBL windows are designed with a offset drainage system with
one way covers and a warm edged non-metal spacer that will prevent seal
breakdown.
Is excessive noise heard through the window when closed?
New replacement windows help seal out the sounds of nature,
traffic, or noisy neighbors. LBL's multi-chamber design and high performance
glass system greatly enhances their soundproofing ability.
Is frustration building with windows that are difficult
to open or close?
Overtime aluminum and nylon track and roller systems will
break down causing difficulty in sliding. The pulley system for sash
windows fails. LBL's windows built-in lift rail sash and vertical slider
constant-force balance hardware offer smooth, trouble-free operation
and sash tilt feature.
Is cleaning a major hassle and replace parts hard to find
or even non-existent?
Aluminum rollers on an aluminum frame will create black
residue overtime, making track cleaning a chore to be avoided. Deterioration
or water stains on the window is a sure sign that the glass needs replacing.
LBL's stainless steel roller sets with self-cleaning raised roller track
save you time.
Are outside temperatures such as cold drafts or heat felt
within the house due to air leaking in, out, or around the window frame
or glass?
Solar heat gain and cold drafts result from the breakdown
of the seal around the interior and exterior of the window frame. LBL's
windows can be insulated with low-e gas and argon gas, which significantly
reduce solar heat gain by reflecting or redirecting much of the radiant
heat the sun sends toward your home. Heat fusion welded corner construction
for maximum rigidity to form square durable assemblies that eliminate
air and water penetration forever.
Vinyl
· Vinyl is maintenance free. Never requires painting, sanding, or refinishing
· LBL vinyl construction provides long lasting beauty and structural integrity
· Vinyl is moisture resistant
· Vinyl has a high resistance to heat loss or gain
· Vinyl is resistant to condensation
· Vinyl windows are easy to operate with “state-of-the-art” balance system
· Vinyl window frames and sashes are fully fusion welded for strength and energy efficiency
· Vinyl welded frames and sashes prevent air and water infiltration
Aluminum
· Aluminum color is sprayed on, which will scratch, flake and peel, requiring paining or touch-up
· Aluminum is subject to impact damage, denting and scratching
· Aluminum corrodes in moist air from pollution and airborne chemicals
· Aluminum readily conducts heat and cold
· Aluminum supports condensation and can frost in cold weather
· Aluminum is subject to abrasion and corrosion, that reduces ease of operation causing binding and sticking
· Aluminum windows are mechanically fastened (screwed) making them prone to air and water infiltration. This condition can cause drafts and leaks, resulting in a loss of energy and damage to your home.
Composite
· Composite comes with a big price tag
· Composite windows are made from more than one type of material. This allows the manufacturer to make the outside surface a weather resistant material like vinyl or aluminum and the interior surface might be made from wood, so it could be painted or stained.
· Composite is a good replacement for wood windows when you want to keep the structural integrity consistent with a historical home.
Low-e glass A very thin layer of metallic oxide or silver that has been applied and then baked onto the glass surface. Low-E blocks radiant heat transfer, keeping heat from escaping or entering a home. Low-E reduces solar heat gain by reflecting or redirecting much of the radiant heat from the sun. Although Low-E reduces a significant amount of ultraviolet light, it will not completely eliminate fading. The resistance of fabrics to fade varies from product to product.
Argon gas
An odorless, colorless, tasteless, non-toxic gas that is six times denser than air. It is used to replace air between the glass panes to reduce temperature transfer.
*U-value
Is the amount of heat transferred through a material. The lower the U-value, the slower the rate of heat flow and the better the insulating quality. By insulating your glass with low-e glass and argon gas, it improves the performance of the U values of your new windows, reduces condensation, helps keep the heat in and the cold out during the winter, and helps keep the heat out and the cold in during summer.
*To qualify for the Energy Tax Credit, your windows U-value must be below .30 and the solar heat gain must also be below .28
The spacer is what stands between two panes of glass. Standard spacers for most new construction block frame windows are made of aluminum. Its inability to expand and contract with temperature changes and its ability as a natural conductor of hot and cold make it the lowest efficient choice of spacer. It is, however, the industry standard.
For this reason, LBL engineered the Super Spacer™, a superior “warm edge” spacer made from organic foam with acrylic construction adhesives that seal to both pieces of glass from Edgetech®. This material naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes, giving it a superior seal.
A unit inch is the total of the largest width and largest height of a window, expressed in inches.
Measure from inside of frame width and inside of frame height and then subtract a 1/4 inch from each side to give your room for adjustment.

One recent industry study estimated homeowners recoup an average of 83 to 85 percent of the cost of window replacements in resale value. The investment return and energy savings add up to a compelling reason for replacement.
Your door may be closed, but is it really keeping your conditioned air inside and external elements outside? It may be time to replace your doors to save energy. Here are a few tips on identifying door problems.
· Hold a candle to the wind. Using a lighted candle, follow the outline of the door around its frame on a windy day. You'll see the candle flicker at every point air is entering the opening.
· Look for the light. On a bright day, stand in your foyer and look for daylight flowing through the door opening. If light is coming in, so is external air. Your weatherstripping may have lost compression, or you may have a warped door frame or door.
· Take the touch test. Touch your door on hot days and cold days. If you feel the exterior temperatures on the inside surface, your door may not have adequate insulation.
· Watch the weatherstripping. Low-quality weatherstripping can lose its compression over time, opening the door to air infiltration. Look for flat or cracked weatherstripping that is no longer doing its job.
· Sill the deal. Your door sill and bottom sweep prevent air infiltration and water penetration. Try to slide a piece of paper under your entry door. If you can, you'll likely need to adjust or replace your bottom sweep.
· Open and shut case. Finally, open and shut your door on both dry and wet, humid days. If your door fits tightly on humid days, then it is probably leaking air on dry days. You may want to consider a high-performance door such as fiberglass to prevent swelling.
Fiberglass doors are slightly more expensive than steel doors, but when you weigh the benefits and features on a fiberglass door vs. a steel door the price difference is very minimal.
Fiberglass
· Most fiberglass doors you can paint or stain the door to your choosing
· Fiberglass doors will not dent, sweat or transfer the cold like a steel door does
· Fiberglass doors are smooth or woodgrain texture with many decorative glass options available
· Fiberglass doors have the genuine look and feel of a wood door
· Insulated fiberglass doors have up to an R-11 rating
· Most fiberglass doors qualify for the Energy Tax Credit
· Fiberglass doors do not chip, warp, rot, or crack
Steel
· Steel is inexpensive
· Steel doors have many glass options
· Steel doors are smooth with no woodgrain or texture
· Steel doors can be difficult to install
· Steel cannot be trimmed to fit an existing opening
· Steel can only be painted. It cannot be stained.
